Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’s The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was an uneasy mixture of Serious Business (the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II) and a Light Romance. Its shtick is that it’s an epistolary novel; this might have worked better if the letters hadn’t all sounded like they were written by the same person, a person, who, moreover, was neither British nor living in the period just after World War II.

Nonetheless, I didn’t hate this novel; I just thought it was light and entertaining and rather forgettable.
