Perhaps Ann Cleeves’s Raven Black suffered in mental comparison to Val McDermid’s stunning which I’d read not long before, but the main reason to like this mystery was the setting (the main island of the Shetland archipelago). The characters were rather stock figures and none of the things that I was interested in (how Fran had come to marry Duncan in the first place, for example!) were ever really developed. Still, this was a nice atmospheric mystery and a good quick read, and I’ll probably borrow the rest of the series from the library so I can find out whether Jimmy ever buys that croft or not!
