Walter Kirn, Up in the Air

ImageRyan Bingham, the protagonist of Walter Kirn’s novel Up in the Air, is trying to reach the holy grail of one million frequent flier miles before he quits his job as a “Career Transition Counsellor.” Just as the hotel rooms that Ryan inhabits during his quest are more or less interchangeable, I felt that this novel’s chapters were also more or less interchangeable, and I have almost no memory of them aside from the fact of their being pleasantly entertaining while I was reading. (I do think I’ll see the movie, however, since I’d be happy to be transitioned from my career by George Clooney!!)
